Research on West African Textiles and Fashion with Project Justine and the University of Education, Ghana
This research initiative, in collaboration with Project Justine in Benin and the Textiles and Fashion Education Department at the University of Education in Ghana, explores sustainable fashion through a culturally informed, trans-disciplinary approach. Focused on the rich diversity of West African textile traditions and fashion innovations, the project examines how cross-disciplinary and culturally inclusive methods can transform the fashion industry and contribute to global sustainability goals.
The core question guiding my research is: How can a trans-disciplinary, West African, and transcultural approach to fashion design address global sustainability challenges while bridging perspectives between Germany and West Africa?
Key Objectives of the Project:
Developing Culturally-Informed, Sustainable Design Solutions
The project integrates expertise from textile design, art practice and fashion design, to create sustainable solutions for global fashion challenges. These include promoting the use of sustainable materials, respecting cultural heritage, and encouraging ethical production practices. These culturally sensitive strategies are shared with professionals in both Germany and West Africa, such as designers, educators, and manufacturers, empowering them to adopt sustainable practices that resonate with local cultural values.
Foster Long-Term International Collaboration
Through continuous exchanges of knowledge, design techniques, and cultural insights, this project aims to establish a sustainable, long-term partnership between Germany and West Africa. By focusing on mutual respect and collaboration, we will foster a dynamic platform for shared learning, co-creation, and cross-cultural understanding that advances sustainable fashion in both regions.
Create Practical Impact
The project will go beyond theoretical frameworks to produce real-world applications, such as hands-on workshops, prototype designs, and case studies that highlight best practices. These practical outcomes will provide actionable insights into how fashion professionals from both regions can collaborate to create sustainable, culturally-relevant fashion solutions, bridging knowledge gaps and addressing local sustainability challenges.

The research will culminate in a joint showcase, where we will present our findings and share insights with industry professionals, educators, and students. This event will foster further dialogue, inspire innovative design solutions, and serve as a valuable resource for professionals and educators worldwide.
